How to give Baytril to your dog

Give enrofloxacin tablets by mouth once daily with food. Do not give within 2 hours of antacids, sucralfate, or calcium/iron supplements as they block absorption. Ensure your dog has access to plenty of fresh water to prevent crystalluria. Complete the entire prescribed course — stopping early promotes antibiotic resistance. Do NOT use in puppies still growing (under 12-18 months). Tablets can be hidden in food or a pill pocket.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't growing puppies take enrofloxacin?
Fluoroquinolones like enrofloxacin damage developing cartilage in growing dogs. This can cause permanent joint problems, lameness, and growth plate abnormalities. Enrofloxacin should not be used in dogs under 12 months (small breeds) or 18 months (large/giant breeds) unless no safer alternative exists.
Should enrofloxacin be given with food?
Yes, giving enrofloxacin with food reduces stomach upset. However, avoid giving it with dairy products, antacids, or supplements containing calcium, iron, or zinc, as these can significantly reduce absorption of the drug.
How long is a typical course of enrofloxacin?
Treatment duration varies by condition: simple UTIs may need 7-14 days, skin infections 14-28 days, and deep infections like bone infections may require 6-8 weeks. Always complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve to prevent antibiotic resistance.
Is enrofloxacin a strong antibiotic?
Enrofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against many gram-negative and some gram-positive bacteria. It achieves good tissue penetration, making it effective for deep infections. However, due to resistance concerns, it should ideally be used based on culture and sensitivity testing rather than as a first-line choice.
Can enrofloxacin cause seizures?
Fluoroquinolones can lower the seizure threshold, particularly when combined with NSAIDs. Dogs with a history of epilepsy or seizures should use this drug with extreme caution or use an alternative antibiotic. Report any tremors or unusual neurological signs immediately.
