What about cats?

Cats rarely eat chocolate, but theobromine is toxic to them too. Published dose thresholds are for dogs, so this calculator doesn't estimate risk for cats. If your cat ate chocolate, call your vet or a poison line.

Questions about chocolate and dogs

How much chocolate is toxic to a dog?
It depends on the type of chocolate and the dog's weight. Mild signs such as vomiting and diarrhea can start at about 20 mg/kg of theobromine and caffeine, heart effects at 40-50 mg/kg, and seizures at 60 mg/kg or more (Merck Veterinary Manual). Dark and baking chocolate reach those levels with far smaller amounts than milk chocolate.
Is white chocolate dangerous for dogs?
White chocolate contains very little theobromine, so poisoning from it is unlikely. Its fat and sugar can still upset the stomach or trigger pancreatitis, so call your vet if your dog ate a lot.
What should I do if my dog ate chocolate?
Call your veterinarian or an animal poison control line right away, even if your dog seems fine. Have the chocolate type, the amount and your dog's weight ready. Treatment works best soon after ingestion, often within about 2 hours. Do not make your dog vomit unless a veterinarian tells you to.
How long after eating chocolate will a dog show symptoms?
Signs usually start within 6-12 hours and can last up to 72 hours in severe cases (Merck Veterinary Manual).
