Questions about this medication

How does Librela work for arthritis pain?
Librela contains bedinvetmab, a monoclonal antibody that targets and neutralizes nerve growth factor (NGF), a key protein involved in osteoarthritis pain signaling. By blocking NGF, Librela reduces pain at its source without the gastrointestinal or kidney side effects associated with traditional NSAIDs.
How is Librela different from NSAIDs like carprofen or meloxicam?
Unlike NSAIDs that work by blocking inflammation enzymes (COX) and can affect the stomach, kidneys, and liver, Librela targets pain signaling specifically through NGF. This means it can be used in dogs with kidney or liver concerns where NSAIDs would be risky. It is given as a monthly injection rather than daily pills.
How quickly will I see improvement with Librela?
Most dogs show noticeable improvement in mobility and comfort within 1-2 weeks of the first injection. Some dogs may take 2-3 injections (months) to achieve full benefit. Improvement is often seen as increased activity, willingness to walk, and easier rising.
Can Librela be used alongside other arthritis treatments?
Yes, Librela can generally be combined with other treatments including joint supplements (glucosamine, omega-3s), physical therapy, and in some cases NSAIDs under veterinary supervision. This multimodal approach often provides the best pain management.
Is Librela safe for long-term use?
Clinical studies have shown Librela to be well-tolerated over extended periods. Since it does not affect the liver, kidneys, or GI tract like NSAIDs, it offers a favorable long-term safety profile. Regular veterinary check-ups are still recommended to monitor overall joint health and treatment response.
